Hello ,

A simple “hello” is almost always followed by “how are you?” and for most of us, the automatic response is “fine” or “good.” But when we’re navigating stress, grief, or mental health challenges, keeping up that default answer can leave us feeling isolated. True connection happens when we step beyond the script and create space for real, honest conversation.

In this edition, you will gain practical, actionable tools for every stage of a mental health conversation: explicit phrases to use when you're struggling but don't know how to say it, gentle ways to gently probe when someone you care about is masking their distress, guidelines for listening without trying to "fix" everything, and simple conversation starters to strengthen community care across your circles.

It takes courage to admit when you're going through a tough period. Whether you want to dive deep, ask for support, or simply set a boundary until you’re ready to share, having the right words ready can make all the difference.

Expressing That You’re Struggling

  • "I’m not fine, to be honest."

  • "I’m actually going through some stuff right now."

  • "Thanks for asking. [Topic/Situation] has been stressing me out lately."

  • "I’m having a day. Well, it’s been one of those weeks, really."

  • "On the struggle bus today."

  • "I’m feeling some kind of way and feeling a bit rough."

When You Want to Talk

  • "Do you have time to listen? I need to vent."

  • "I’m having some issues with [Topic]. Do you have time to talk or grab coffee later?"

  • "I’d love to get your advice on something when you have a free moment."

  • "Can I text you or bounce some thoughts off you?"

  • "Have you ever felt like [how you’re feeling]?"

When You’re Not Ready to Talk

  • "Thanks for asking, but I don’t feel like going into detail right now."

  • "I appreciate you checking in, I’m just still trying to find the right words."

  • "I don’t feel like talking right now, but I’d love a hug / to just hang out for a bit so I’m not alone."

  • "I’m still thinking things through. Can I reach out to you when I’m ready?"

  • "Let’s talk about [different topic] instead for now, if that’s okay."

Where to Start: Get More Language

Distress shows up in many ways: a strain in someone's tone, a shift in body language, or a sudden change in usual habits. When you notice a friend, colleague, or family member masking their feelings, opening the door gently can help them feel safe enough to unburden themselves.

Gently Opening the Door

  • "Are you sure? If you ever want to talk, I’m always here."

  • "It seems like something might be weighing on you. I’m here to listen if you want to share."

  • "I’ve been 'fine' before when I wasn't, no pressure, but I’m around if you want to chat."

  • "Do you want to take a walk or grab a bite later? It feels like we have a lot to catch up on."

When Someone Opens Up: DOs and DON'Ts

When someone trusts you with their truth, how you respond matters far more than having perfect advice.

Checking in on those around us (neighbors, teammates, old friends, or colleagues) is an essential act of collective care. You don’t need to be a mental health professional to offer meaningful support; you just need to initiate the conversation.

Reaching Out to Someone You Haven't Seen Lately

  • "You were on my mind today and I wanted to reach out."

  • "Hi, it’s been a minute! I wanted to make sure you’re doing okay."

  • "Long time no see! How have you and the family been holding up?"

Checking In During Hard Times

  • "Hey, I know there’s been a lot going on lately. I just want to make sure you’re good."

  • "How are you holding up since [recent event/loss]?"

  • "Hey, I heard about [situation]. No need to reply right now, but I’m here if you want to talk."

Checking In With a Group or Team

  • "Hey everyone, is anyone else feeling a bit exhausted by [recent event/news]?"

  • "Hi all! Just wanted to pause and check in. How's everyone doing today?"

  • "Did anybody else hear about [news event]? How are you all processing it?"
